Back to School~2010

The boys started back to school this week!
It's been a bit of a funky summer for us~ so I wasn't quite ready for Summer Break to be over...
Until the last 2 weeks...at which point I was seriously considering sending both of them to Boarding School.
(I know they look all nice and innocent in this picture, do not be fooled!)
Spencer started High School this year.  He was a bit nervous, though he wouldn't admit it.  Nervous = Ornery at our house.  Ornery kids make for an ornery mom.  Just sayin'.  There has been a lot of weeping and wailing and gnashing of teeth...and that was just me!
We spent several days at the HS getting registration completed.  I went to Sophomore orientation with him.  It was mostly a big pep rally.
He doesn't know the school song yet, so I've been having lots of fun singing my school song.
Last night, I was singing to them (which was not appreciated) and we were laughing about this story:

When Emily was in 9th grade, Spanish Fork HS was playing Payson HS (my Alma mater).  She and some friends were going to the game...she liked to talk about how "way better" her school was than mine!
Imagine her surprise when she came home from school with her friends, and I had green posters on the front door and all over the house!  "Lion's Rule, Don's Drool",  "Lion Pride" etc.  I also had painted a green lion's paw on my cheek!  Had to show my school spirit!!!  We laugh about it now, but at the time she was not happy with me!
The highlight of the afternoon was when I delighted them by singing my school fight song!

"We are a band of soldiers true,
Our armor is the strength of youth!
Our weapons are not muskets blue,
But shining darts of thought and truth, and truth.
Our enemy is ignorance,
A strong and sullen foe.
But with increasing diligence,
To victory we will surely go!

We are marching, we are marching,
We are marching on to victory every day!
Come and join us, come and join us,
Come and help us put the battle in array. ARRAY!
We will conquer, we will conquer,
Though our foe's the worst the world has ever seen!
Our war cry is the school,
Our hope's the Golden Rule.
And our colors are the silver and the green!"

Do you remember your HS fight song?
(P.S. Emily...Lions are still way better than Dons!)

See the expression on this boy's face?  I think it pretty much sums up the last 2 weeks around here!  Did I mention everyone has been pretty ornery?
Shane is a 4th grader this year.  I seem to remember being much older in 4th grade!  These 4th graders all look pretty young to me!

This may be a forced smile.  He is much happier now that he has a couple days under his belt.  He was nervous to go back to school too! Nervous = Ornery...right?  Right!!!
Happy Back to School Week!

  1. Valerie our younger boys are about the same age. My Taylor is going to be a sophmore this year and Trent a 5th grader. And we have had a few honory smiles too. Ha Ha You have some handsome boys there! Isn't the fake smile pretty much a "guy thing?" JUst sayin!

That is so good that you remember you fight song. I only know the BYU fight song but I went to 4 different High Schools and couldn't tell you the fight song for any of them.

  3. First of all, I'm glad you know how to spell ornery. Second of all, handsome boys! I can't believe Spencer is already in high school? Shane in 4th? Amazing!
I remember my school song that we'd sing while folding our arms and holding hands with the person standing next to you, but I can't remember the fight song. Maybe PHS Lions had more fight than Bonneville Lakers!
Happy Back to School Week to you too!

Your boys are handsome, even if they aren't in the mood for back to school pictures :)
I do not remember my school fight song. I was so anxious to get out of H.S. and go to college!!

  5. I love that you razzed your daughter of the rivaling high schools! I don't remember our fight song from high school! :(
My oldest starts Kindergarten on Wednesday so we're looking forward to that - and hoping for no ornery smiles :)

  6. Valerie, you crack me up! And no, I don't remember my high school's song, which is not surprising considering that i had a terrible attitude all through high school...

I can't believe Spencer is in high school. Is that really the little boy that i remember running around the neighborhood?? That makes me feel old.

    They are cute boys.
Hope they have a great year.

  9. Kearns Cougars were pretty tough too. Gold and Green were our colors, still my favorite out of school colors.

Here is our fight song; I admit I could only remember portions so I had to look it up. But if I had to compare your song is pretty good.
    Such memories...

Go mighty Cougars, on we’ll go
Strive mighty Cougars, in fame we will grow
We’re loyal Cougars to gold and green
On Kearns High Cougars to victory.

Go ye Cougars go, mighty Cougars go
We will rally Cougars, her fame and honor grow
Loyal to the Cougars, to the gold and green
Fight ye Kearns High Cougars and march on to victory.

Go mighty Cougars, on we’ll go
Strive mighty Cougars, in fame we will grow
We’re loyal Cougars to gold and green
On Kearns High Cougars to victory.

  11. There is always so much anticipation and anxiety in starting a new school year.
    the friends
    the cloths
    the new schedules
    getting up early again

BUT, rhythm does restore itself back to the family.
    The boys look very handsome.

I have NO IDEA what my HS song was.

  13. I can still sing and play(on flute) my high school song. You rock with school spirit!

Back to school at the high school was a real pain this year. With that new system, my daughter did not have classes the week before. Thank-heavens I was able to get an appointment with the counselor the last Friday before school started. The fees went up this year, which no mention of it was made. Classes use to be 5 but are now 7.50.

I am glad we have made it through the 1st month!(smile)
