Apricots, Apricots

Turns out that birds also like eating my apricots.
And so do squirrels!
(Yeah, we have all kinds of critters 'round these parts)

We did salvage two 5-gallon buckets full of apricots though.
So~ what's a gal to do with two buckets full of very ripe apricots???

 Well...
Jam, of course!

 11 Pints of Freezer Jam
5 Pints of cooked Jam (pain in the patootie to make!)
4 Quarts Nectar (or Chewy Juice as Rick's family calls it)

See anything unusual in this picture?
(Besides the really dry, hope-it doesn't-burn field?)

Here's a little bit closer look.
She was in the garden, by the apricot tree. She startled Shane, or he startled her...Or both.
He ran in the house, she ran to the back yard; for her photo shoot.
Shane thought it was a really big buck, but he turned out to be a she...with big ears!

Science Fair...Winner!

Last week was our school's Science Fair for 5th & 6th Graders.
Shane and his friend did a project on Balloon Hovercrafts

Their project was 1 of 10 Winners!
They'll be taking their project to the District Science Fair!

This picture just makes me laugh. :)
Shane is a fun kid. He can be a real ham sometimes.
And that is my son, who is in desperate need of a haircut. :)

Shane!

Shane is officially a 10 year old!

He wanted me to do a treasure hunt (like we do for Christmas) for his presents.
We settled for the "Hot & Cold" game.

 Shane loves to fish!
So I made this cake for him.
It turned out pretty cute.
And he liked it~ that's all that matters.

Happy Birthday, kiddo!
(He's holding his chest because it is hurting! He got an air-soft gun for his birthday, and trying to learn how to use it, he strained his chest muscles. He hurt for a couple of days!)

Baseball!
It's been a rough start to the Baseball season this year.
It's kinda tough to play ball in the Snow!

Shane's been really sick for a couple of weeks~ but he only missed one game so far.
These pictures were taken after we did team pictures. When we got home, he wanted a few more.

This is his first time playing in an actual Little League.
He had to try out and everything!
He's in the Minor league.
He's a pretty good little ball player~ and I'm glad he'll be perfecting his skills and really learning how to play.
It's been fun so far.
He has an awesome coach, who really teaches the boys a lot but is not real intense and uptight.
He's not a screamer/yeller coach. And I like that!

Shane usually plays 1st or 3rd, and they've been talking to him about pitching too.

School Field Trip
It was cold and miserable!
But the kids had fun!!!
I'll post more about that later.

Back to School~2010

The boys started back to school this week!
It's been a bit of a funky summer for us~ so I wasn't quite ready for Summer Break to be over...
Until the last 2 weeks...at which point I was seriously considering sending both of them to Boarding School.
(I know they look all nice and innocent in this picture, do not be fooled!)
Spencer started High School this year.  He was a bit nervous, though he wouldn't admit it.  Nervous = Ornery at our house.  Ornery kids make for an ornery mom.  Just sayin'.  There has been a lot of weeping and wailing and gnashing of teeth...and that was just me!
We spent several days at the HS getting registration completed.  I went to Sophomore orientation with him.  It was mostly a big pep rally.
He doesn't know the school song yet, so I've been having lots of fun singing my school song.
Last night, I was singing to them (which was not appreciated) and we were laughing about this story:

When Emily was in 9th grade, Spanish Fork HS was playing Payson HS (my Alma mater).  She and some friends were going to the game...she liked to talk about how "way better" her school was than mine!
Imagine her surprise when she came home from school with her friends, and I had green posters on the front door and all over the house!  "Lion's Rule, Don's Drool",  "Lion Pride" etc.  I also had painted a green lion's paw on my cheek!  Had to show my school spirit!!!  We laugh about it now, but at the time she was not happy with me!
The highlight of the afternoon was when I delighted them by singing my school fight song!

"We are a band of soldiers true,
Our armor is the strength of youth!
Our weapons are not muskets blue,
But shining darts of thought and truth, and truth.
Our enemy is ignorance,
A strong and sullen foe.
But with increasing diligence,
To victory we will surely go!

We are marching, we are marching,
We are marching on to victory every day!
Come and join us, come and join us,
Come and help us put the battle in array. ARRAY!
We will conquer, we will conquer,
Though our foe's the worst the world has ever seen!
Our war cry is the school,
Our hope's the Golden Rule.
And our colors are the silver and the green!"

Do you remember your HS fight song?
(P.S. Emily...Lions are still way better than Dons!)

See the expression on this boy's face?  I think it pretty much sums up the last 2 weeks around here!  Did I mention everyone has been pretty ornery?
Shane is a 4th grader this year.  I seem to remember being much older in 4th grade!  These 4th graders all look pretty young to me!

This may be a forced smile.  He is much happier now that he has a couple days under his belt.  He was nervous to go back to school too! Nervous = Ornery...right?  Right!!!
Happy Back to School Week!

Nine Years Ago...

Nine years ago, Shane was just a baby!  And a cute one at that!  He was my fussiest baby, though. He was a terrible sleeper and a terrible eater!  Good thing he was not my first, or he may have been my only! :)

Yesterday was his birthday.  How time flies!

Then: (at about 6 months)

 Now:

Shane is a fun, funny kid.  He loves sports and is very athletic.  He loves basketball and baseball.  He also is an awesome skateboarder and he loves to swim too!  He also has natural talent for tumbling/gymnastics.

Shane still likes to cuddle, maybe that's because he's the youngest?  He likes me to lie down by him at night until he falls asleep.  Every night he tells me, "Goodnight, I love you, see you in the morning....I love you more than anything in the world, even Pluto and all that stuff!"  He has also made it clear that he does NOT love me more than oxygen.  Sometimes I like to tell him I love him more than anything in the world too...except for glazed doughnuts!  (Or some other wacky, obviously not true item).

For his cake, he chose "Better Than S*x Cake... (we usually call it Snickers or Skors Cake... a double entendre?) Shane has been calling it "Sexy" Cake.  When grandma asked him what kind of cake he was having, he replied; "I'd rather not say".  Funny kid!  (And, the cake didn't turn out right...darn it!)

We had Chicken Broccoli Casserole for dinner (no surprise there).  Happy to report, no blood was shed, but the left-overs are all gone!

Happy birthday to one sweet, fun, loveable boy!

Life, According to Shane

Shane went with me to the store a few days ago. This was our "hilarious" conversation:

Shane: "Mom, who will teach me how to drive when I get my learner's permit"
(His older brother just got his permit).
"Because you will probably be dead by then."

Me: Blank stare, awkward silence. (Yeah, how do you respond to that?)
Stammering..."I'm only 43, so that will make me what? 51?"

Shane: "Exactly!"

I didn't hear the rest of the conversation, because my hearing aide fell out...and when I bent to pick it up the front legs of my walker slipped off the curb and I fell and broke a hip! And he thinks I'm old? At least no one asked if I was his Grandmother!

Fascination

Shane was only 4 when we moved to Arizona. As a result, he really doesn't remember much about Utah.
These are just a few of the things that are fascinating to him right now...

This is a "park" in the middle of our neighborhood. In AZ, we would call this a greenbelt. When we say that here, we get confused, blank stares! Most the kids call it "the field". Fascinating also, is the fact that he can just run outside and there are tons of neighbor kids to play with...and more fascinating still? That he can play outside! (AZ = either too hot...or not safe!)

Heater. Vents. Hours of fascinated play for an 8 year old boy! Yes, yes, we had these in AZ too, but they were in the ceiling, not the floor. I've already had to fish several toys out of the vent in his room. Awesome hiding place for action figures.

Grass. Green. Soft. No further explanation needed.

Our (ugly) mailbox. We had a community mail box in AZ. (The ones with all the little individual boxes). He loves to get the mail. Thankfully, this fascination has died down somewhat as he usually just brought the mail up to the front porch and left it there!

Mountains, mountains and more mountains! And if you look closely, you will see there is snow on the top of this beauty! He can't wait until it snows in the valley! He does think it's cold here though! (He ain't seen nothin' yet!) :) Awww, he's such an Arizona boy!

Speaking of Chickens

When Emily was in Kindergarten, she learned a cute little song about a Silly Chicken.

I Had a Little Chicken
(Tune: Turkey in the Straw)

"Oh, I had a little chicken
And she wouldn't lay an egg.
So I poured hot water
Up and down her leg.
And she giggled and she giggled,
And she giggled all the day.
Then, the silly little chicken
Laid a hard-boiled egg!"

She sang this song at the ward talent show. I can still see her, standing up on the stage in front of the microphone...shimmying up and down and flapping her elbows like a chicken! The 2nd verse was just a series of "bock, bock, bock, bock-bock...bock, bock, bock, bock"...she was such a cutie! She has always loved to sing and perform, and has never suffered from stage fright.
She is, however, afraid of chickens, as evidenced in this video:

(Both girls are, in fact, named Emily. Scaredy-cat/ "chicken" Emily is the one wearing her hair down...)
(And does she really say, "Those are hens, not chickens!")?
On the other hand...Shane is kind of shy and does not like to perform in front of others. He doesn't even like to be in the yearly Primary program. You would never catch him performing in a ward talent show!
But, he is not afraid of chickens!
He and a few of the other boys in the neighborhood, have been going to the Smith's house to help "pick" (gather) fresh chicken eggs. (These are very patient and kind neighbors!)

Last week, he brough home a dozen fresh eggs. He is fascinated with the variety of size, shape and color.

He also enjoys the whole process of "picking" the eggs. And is quite disgusted that, in his words;

"Chickens eat their own babies!" He dropped an egg that he had gathered and the chickens flocked right to it and gobbled it down. He thinks that is pretty gross!

He asked me to scramble some of his eggs for him. He told me exactly how to wash them off before cracking them. The first batch of eggs, he took 2 bites and said they "tasted weird". Later he admitted he was just thinking about where they came from & was worried that there might be baby chicks in the eggs and he didn't want to eat a baby chick! This was partly from a family conversation the night before, wherein Rick and I recounted instances of cracking fresh eggs...and finding forming chicks inside...and from his sibling's constant, "Ewww...that's gross, I'd never eat a fresh egg" comments.

He is now over the squeamishness and has eaten (and enjoyed) fresh scrambled eggs. I'm still working on my squeamishness!

When I was a kid, my grandma had chickens. I have fond memories of staying at her house and helping with the chickens. I got to help shoo the chickens in to the coop at night, and also helped gather eggs from the nests. I wasn't as brave as grandma, she would have to shoo the hens away for me to be able to snatch up the eggs. Those hens peck! (yeah, I might have a chicken phobia myself!)

Below is a picture of grandma's chicken coops. If I remember correctly, the large one was the "Hen House" and the small one was for the Roosters. They have not been used in a good, long time. (The coops, not the roosters...well, those too!)

I remember too, a few times of witnessing a Rooster meet his demise on the chopping block! It's a funny (and slightly disturbing) sight to see a Rooster running around the pasture with no head!

And, we (the grandkids) liked to chase each other with the chicken feet. After they were chopped off, you could pull the tendon and make the foot curl up. This really grosses me out now!

Chicken Coops in Grandma's Pasture

My grandma used to make the best chicken and noodles!

I tried this recipe for Lion House Chicken Noodle Soup a couple of weeks ago. I didn't use the dehydrated ingredients. And I added 2-11 oz pkgs of "Grandma's" brand frozen homemade style egg noodles. Oh, it was beyond delicious and totally reminded me of grandma's chicken and noodles. There was very little "soup" to it! But it was oh, so good!

And that is all I have to say about that.

For today.

It's Great to be 8!!!

Or: Shane's Birthday!

Shane turned 8 years old last month. Eight is a very important birthday and he was very excited! His birthday was also the same day as Easter this year, so he thought that was especially cool!

Shane was reading his birthday card from Grandma and Pa and when he got to the part where they had signed their names, he tossed the card down and said; "Blah, blah, blah, I can't read SPANISH!" We laughed so hard! I bet my parents didn't know they could speak Spanish! Ha, ha...He meant to say CURSIVE and realized his mistake after we all busted up laughing.

He requested Chicken & Broccoli casserole for his birthday dinner, and I made him a skateboard cake. It turned out cute, but it was HUGE and most of it didn't get eaten. :(

A few weeks later, Shane got to be baptized by his dad. We had to wait for the font to be filled, since someone had forgotten that little detail. No worries, though. Since Shane is small, they didn't have to fill the font too full...although it was a long ways down for Rick to bend over! (Good thing Rick is short, too!) Everything went well, although I do admit to holding my breath until everyone was standing upright again. Good thing Rick didn't topple over, or his pants didn't split or something else disastrous!

We had a nice program. Emily and her friend Aubrie sang "A Child's Prayer". We had a couple of talks...all short and sweet and just perfect.

Shane looks so handsome and grown up in his new Sunday clothes. He refuses to wear a clip on tie! He wants a "real" tie, just like his dad and older brothers wear. He also is very excited to have a nice, new set of scriptures.

Hooray Shane! Way to CTR!

We love you Shane! Happy 8th Birthday and Happy Baptism Day!
